Samuel Adams – Latitude 48 IPA

Todays review is Samuel Adams® Latitude 48 IPA a unique IPA brewed with a select blend of hops from top German, English, and American growing regions all located close to the 48th latitude within the “hop belt” of the Northern Hemisphere. The Flavor is distinctive and intense hop aroma and flavor balanced by a slight sweetness and light body. It pours coppery amber in color (somewhat light). Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout

Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout by Great Divide Brewing Company is todays beer review. With a 9.5% ABV this brew is Aged on a blend of French and toasted oak chips infuses a subtle oak and vanilla character into Yeti’s already intense chocolate, roasted coffee malt flavor and hugely agressive hop profile. Poured like black gold. Mouthfeel was rich and smooth. Drinking this beer was like being punched in the face by a golden boxing glove and loving every punch.

Food Pairings: Grilled NY strip, fudge brownies, strong/salty blue cheese.

Sierra Nevada – Ovila Dubbel

On fathers day this year my wife and I stopped to visit a buddy of mine. We brought Stone IPA and he greeted us with Ovila Dubbel from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. The bottle presentation alone is extremely appealing. Sold in a 750 Ml bottle with a brown gold abel. Careful when opening as it is corked. Pours a beautiful, hazy amber color, dark tone but nice for a Belgian. It has an off white head that is rich in smell and taste. The aroma is of heavy fruits. The beer goes down thick but incredibly smooth and not to off putting. A fine dark brew easy for all drinkers to enjoy. Not to bitter, with the 7.5% ABV still and strong beer.  Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. did a fine job with this belgian brew.

Stone – Arrogant Bastard

Arrogant Bastard by Stone Brewing Co. truly is a unique Ale. Where do I begin, I can definitely tell you its not for everyone. Most people that I introduce this Ale to will absolutely dislike it or love it (very few love it). Best described as an agressive ale, the thick harsh taste lingers in your mouth. As they say this will put some hair on your chest. Very heavy Ale it is actually quite filling. You have to have a certain level of  beer love to be able to appreciate ale of this caliber. Available in a 22 oz bottle and on draft.

The Stone Brewery site says it Best: “We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beverage will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make things taste better.”

ABV: 7.2%

Guinness – Harp Lager

From the brewers of Guinness comes Harp Lager. Sold in bottles and available on tap, pours a clear yellow/gold and a surprisingly long lasting quarter inch of head. Very smooth taste to begin and a nice hop taste that lingers after your drink. Does not have a bitter after taste found in most lagers, definitely one of the better tasting lagers I have ever had. Better know for its pairing with Guinness know as a Half and Half.

Food pairing: Meat (Poultry, Fish, Shellfish)

ABV: 5%

Longboard – Fire Rock Pale Ale

Fire Rock Pale AleMy cousin was at my local food 4 less and called to let me know she was picking up a variety pack of Longboard Brews. I was a bit skeptical as I did not care much for Longboard Island Lager. But as a beer lover I will drink any brew.

Fire Rock Pale Ale is a “Hawaiian-style” pale ale. Its copper color results from the blend of specialty roasted malts. The pronounced citrus-floral hop aroma comes from the amounts of Galena, Cascade & Mt.Hood hops added to each brew. I must say this brew is amazing and nothing like the Island Lager. It is crisp and has a wonderful lingering after taste. Contains 5.9% ABV.

Fire Rock Pale Ale food pairings: barbecue and chicken.

Leffe Blonde

Leffe Blonde Belgian Abbey Ale is a highly fermented beer, The ingredients are light malt, corn, water, hops and yeast, which give it a bright golden color. The alcohol content is 6.6%. The taste is full, sweet and fruity and has a hint of bitter orange, and the after-taste is powerful and surprising. Seriously the after taste is long lasting, when breathing out after your drink you can taste your breath.

Leffe Blonde is best served in its own specially designed chalice-shaped glass. However, I did not have one of these glasses laying around. The glass helps preserve the beer’s aroma and creates the perfect, creamy head. I used a pint glass and it was still amazing. I am now intrigued about how much the glass makes a difference. I will go out and purchase the glass and update my post soon.

Food Pairing: Meat dishes like grilled pork loin and pan-fried steak, smoked salmon and a range of subtle cheeses.

DogFish Head – Palo Santo Marron

I made a trip to my local BevMo looking to try the 120 Minute IPA by DogFish Head brewing company. Unfortunately the clerk informed me that their distributor was having some trouble getting them that brew but, he did recommend trying Palo Santo Marron also by DogFish Head. As a side note I love how knowledgable and helpful the workers at BevMo. So for 14.99 I purchased my 4 pack and was on my way home for some drinking.

This unfiltered brown ale is aged/brewed in a handmade wooden brewing vessels. This beer is a 12% abv and malty brown ale. I poured the ale into my pint glass and drank it at room temperature. Mainly because I feel that good craft beers must taste just as good at room temperature as they are cold. Also i didn’t feel like waiting for it to get cold in my fridge. I took my first drink and holly crap is that a strong beer. This is definitely a beer you dont want to swig. I sipped slowly and enjoyed the caramel and vanilla taste. This unique taste comes from the Paraguayan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were crafted. You could really taste the richness of the beer. My wife and I shared  the four pack and both had a good buzz after two beers. Next time your looking for a strong craft beer be sure to pick up Palo Santo Marron by DogFish Head.

DogFish Head Food Pairing Recommendations are: Steak, chorizzo sausage, cajun cuisine, farmhouse cheddar

Brew Year’s Eve

Happy Brew Year’s Eve everyone. Today marks the eve of one of the historic dates in beer history. Brew Year’s Eve celebrates the eve of the modification of the Volstead Act which raised the legal alcohol percentage of beverages from 0.05 percent to 3.2 percent, allowing some beers to be legal once again on April 7, 1933. The acts purpose was to prohibit intoxicating beverages, to regulate the manufacture, production, use and sale of high-proof spirits for other than beverage purposes, and to ensure an ample supply of alcohol and promote its use in scientific research and in the development of fuel, dye and other lawful industries and practices, such as religious rituals. Over 1.5 million barrels of beer was consumed during the first 24-hours after the modification of the act! This was a huge day for craft brewers.

Eight months later, the 21st Amendment was ratified, ending Prohibition after nearly 13 years.
